The Top Five Bible Verses for Men
During World War II, after Hitler bulldozed his way across France, demanding unconditional surrender from Allied forces in Europe, thousands of British and French troops dug in along the coast of Northern France in a last ditch effort to hold off the overpowering German army. They knew they were trapped and soon would be killed. As they waited for what seemed inevitable, faithful British soldiers sent a three-word message across the world to the Allied forces. “And if not.”
Was it code? No. It was a Biblical reference to the Book of Daniel when the three Hebrew boys faced King Nebuchadnezzar and his fiery furnace of death. After the King’s threat they answered, “Our God is able to save us and He will save us, “and if not” we will remain faithful to Him anyway” Daniel 3:18. Motivated by their brothers’ courage, boats from all over set out for the coast of France and rescued 338,000 Allied troops as the Word of God fulfilled its purpose.
Would the armies of today been able to understand the God Code in which it was meant? Would they have been saved? I think not, as Bible illiteracy is at an all time high in our beloved country. The fact is, today, 90% of the Born Again Christians surveyed do not believe in the totality of the Bible, no less understand it. (Barna Research 06)
Most Christian Men do have an impotency problem. The solution has little to do with Viagra but all to do with owning their own verse of God’s word. They know just enough about God and His word to be frustrated about His will and the part they play.
The power that is there for the taking comes from knowing, believing and living in this word. There are three effects that your own property of real estate scripture should have on you:
1- It should Answer the questions in your Head
2- It should Astound the motives of your Heart
3- It should Assist the works of your Hands
Your Private Property here will answer the three abundant life questions every man needs to know.
1- Who am I?
2- Why do I exist
3- What am I to do?
Last month in Ground Rules “The Five Most Important Bible Verses for Men” we explored the first three of five. #1 John10:10 #2 Romans12:2. #3 2Tim1:7
Hopefully you received a set of night vision goggles to see things that formerly were hidden from you.
For our fourth scripture we travel to the first century where the Apostle Paul is dealing with a Corinthian Church that gives him more headaches than all the others put together. If Paul was brought up in the 20 century I believe he would have quoted the great theologian Popeye the Sailor yelling, “I’ve had all I can stands and I can’t stands no more.”
Paul had just about had all he could take from the men in Corinth. Egotistic immaturity and irresponsibility was running rampant. Worship in the church had degenerated to entertainment. The gifts of prophecy and speaking in tongues were reduced to show and tell. It sadly was “My mumble is better than your mumble” as new believers saw Christ’s love take a back seat to spiritual pride.
In the thirteenth chapter of 1Corinthians (the Love Chapter) God inspires and Paul writes to boys who think they are men for then and for Centuries to come.
“When I was a child I used to speak as a child, think like a child, reason as a child. When I became a man, I did away with childish things”. 1Corinthians 13:11
For you and me to use this verse and apply it to our lives today, we first have to define what biblical immaturity is. It is interesting to note that the progression of immaturity in this verse parallels that of a child/adolescent. A child speaks (acts) first then thinks as he then reasons the consequences. A Mature Man reasons, understands then acts. The word child here in the Greek as defined by both Key Word and Strong’s Dictionaries means “infant”. In Biblical values, “an immature Christian”.
• Immature males speak (act) before they think. Many broken relationships and business failures might have been spared had a mature man been on one end of it.
• Immature males believe every new philosophy about their faith, finances and family while never fully grasping the truth that discipleship and discomfort go hand and hand. Eph 4:14
• Immature males are mentally lazy, dull and need to be told things over and over instead of hearing it once and completing the task at hand. Hebrews 5:12-14
• Immature males are victims complaining about circumstances and making matters worse instead of playing the man and failing forward as a victor.
• Immature males go to their wives with every sniffling little trouble in their life instead of playing the Man and speaking with her from the victory side of life.
• Immature males make a woman their idol and places her in a position only meant for God. They put a burden on a woman she is not equipped to bear creating dysfunctional family relationships down through generations.
• When a man acts like a child, He makes his wife his mother….and we all know you can’t make love to your mother…..ouch. Thanks Dr. Cole.
Finally in chapter 4 of Galatians we are told that outside of Salvation an immature man is really in the same state of bondage that he was before he got saved. A slave to the world.
Paul, in contrasting the mature side of men, says when he became a man he put away immature things. The Greek word man finds its root word meaning “perfect, mature, a man of understanding, husband (responsible overseer), one that is aged to perfection.
Man of God, Scripture bears witness to the fact that if we do not mature in our faith that we are no better on earth now than when we were of the world. For the serious minded guy this is scary and should rock your world as the abundant life is not even in sight.
What’s a guy to do? Glad you asked. Next month we will hear what God says about what a mature guy looks like and how to get there as we complete our series on “The Top Five Bible Verses for Men”.
